Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Abu Talhah sent a marriage proposal to Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), so she replied: "Abu Talhah, a proposal from someone like you cannot be rejected, but I am a Muslim woman and you are a disbeliever. It is not permissible for me to marry you. If you accept Islam, that will be my dowry; I will not ask you for anything else." So Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, then Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to him. She became pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful child. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) loved this child very much. After some time, the child became ill. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was extremely saddened by this, to the extent that he became weak.
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to visit the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) morning and evening. Once, he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and in his absence, the child passed away. Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) applied fragrance to the child, cleaned him, and laid him in our small room. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came home and asked: "How is my son?" Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: "He is in a good state; since he became ill, tonight he is the most peaceful." Then Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) praised Allah for this and became very happy. Then Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) presented the evening meal before him, he ate the meal, then Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) applied some fragrance and came before him, until Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) had relations with her. When he had eaten the evening meal and had relations with his wife, Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Abu Talhah, what is your opinion if one of your neighbors lent you something and you kept benefiting from it, then he wanted to take it back from you, would you return it to him?" Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes, by Allah, I would return it to him." Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "With pleasure?" He replied: "With pleasure." So Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Allah Almighty gave me my son as a loan to you. You benefited from him as long as He willed, then Allah Almighty took his soul, so now be patient and hope for reward." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: So Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited «انا لله و انا الیه راجعون» and was patient. The next day, he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the morning and informed him about the incident of Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), that is, what she had done. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah bless both of you in the night you spent together."
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) became pregnant from that night. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him): "When Umm Sulaym gives birth to the child, bring him to me." So Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) brought the child wrapped in a cloth to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) chewed a date and put it in the child's mouth, so the child began to suck it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Ansar truly love dates." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tahneek for the child, named him, and prayed for him. He named him Abdullah.
