أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حِبَّانُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، أَنَّ ثَابِتَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ الأَنْصَارِيَّ ، قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ خَشِيتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ قَدْ هَلَكْتُ ، قَالَ : " لِمَ ؟ " ، قَالَ : قَدْ نَهَانَا اللَّهُ عَنْ أَنْ نُحِبَّ أَنْ نُحْمَدَ بِمَا لَمْ نَفْعَلْ ، وَأَجِدُنِي أُحِبُّ الْحَمْدَ ، وَنَهَى اللَّهُ عَنِ الْخُيَلاءِ ، وَأَجِدُنِي أُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ ، وَنَهَى اللَّهُ أَنْ نَرْفَعَ أَصْوَاتَنَا فَوْقَ صَوْتِكَ ، وَأَنَا امْرُؤٌ جَهِيرُ الصَّوْتِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا ثَابِتُ ، أَلا تَرْضَى أَنْ تَعِيشَ حَمِيدًا ، وَتُقْتَلَ شَهِيدًا ، وَتَدْخُلَ الْجَنَّةَ ؟ " ، قَالَ : بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : فَعَاشَ حَمِيدًا ، وَقُتِلَ شَهِيدًا يَوْمَ مُسَيْلِمَةَ الْكَذَّابِ .
Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais Ansari’s son Ismail narrates: Once Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), by Allah! I fear that I may be doomed.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Why is that?” He replied, “Allah Almighty has forbidden us from liking something we have not done and being praised for it, and I find within myself that I like to be praised. Likewise, Allah has forbidden us from arrogance, and I find within myself that I like beauty. Allah Almighty has also forbidden us from raising our voices above your voice, and I am a person whose voice is loud.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O Thabit, are you not pleased that you will live a praiseworthy life, be martyred, and enter Paradise?” I said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).”
The narrator states: So he lived a praiseworthy life and was martyred on the day of the battle against Musaylimah the Liar.
