Hadith 7136
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَتُحْسِنُ السُّرْيَانِيَّةَ ؟ " قُلْتُ : لا ، قَالَ : " فَتَعَلَّمْهَا فَإِنَّهُ تَأْتِينَا كُتُبٌ " ، قَالَ : فَتَعَلَّمْتُهَا فِي سَبْعَةِ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا ، قَالَ الأَعْمَشُ : كَانَتْ تَأْتِيهِ كُتُبٌ لا يَشْتَهِي أَنْ يَطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهَا إِلا مَنْ يَثِقُ بِهِ .
Sayyiduna Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: Do you know the Syriac language? I replied: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then learn it, letters from (non-Muslim rulers) come to us. Sayyiduna Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I learned this language in seventeen days. The narrator named A’mash states: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) wished that only a trustworthy person should be informed of the contents of the letters that came to him.
