Urwah bin Zubair, Saeed bin Musayyib, Alqamah bin Waqas, and Ubaydullah bin Abdullah narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) regarding the incident of Ifk, through which Allah Almighty declared Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) innocent.
Zuhri states: This group narrated to me the narration from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her); some of them remembered the incident better, but I will narrate it as a single event. I have remembered the words of each of them that they narrated to me from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her); some of their narrations confirm others. All of them stated that Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated this:
Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to go on a journey, he would draw lots among his wives, and the one whose name was drawn would accompany him. Once, before going on a battle, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew lots among us, and my name was drawn, so I set out with him. This was after the command of hijab had been revealed. I would be seated in my howdah, and I would stay in it during the halts. We were traveling until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the expedition and set out for the return. When we approached Madinah, during a halt, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) announced departure at night. I got up and walked away from the army to fulfill my need. When I returned and touched my chest, I found that my necklace of stones was not there. I went back to search for my necklace, and this search delayed me. The people who used to carry my howdah came, lifted it, and placed it on the camel I used to ride. They thought I was inside the howdah. At that time, women were light and not heavy; they did not have much flesh, and they ate little food. So, when they lifted the howdah, they did not notice any difference in its weight. They lifted it and set off. I was a young girl of little age. They made the camel rise and departed.
After the army had left, I found my necklace. When I returned to the camp, I found no one there. I stayed at the place where I had been, thinking that when they found me missing, they would return for me. While I was sitting there, sleep overcame me, and I fell asleep. Safwan bin Muattal Salami was coming behind the army. When he reached my resting place in the morning, he saw the figure of a sleeping person. He had seen me before the command of hijab, so he recognized me and recited: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un." I woke up, and I covered my face with my cloak. By Allah, he did not speak to me, nor did I hear from him any word except his recitation of "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un." He made his camel kneel, and I mounted it. He led the camel until we reached the army, which had halted at noon. (Regarding this incident) the one who was to be destroyed was destroyed, and the one who took the greatest part in this false accusation was Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul.
We arrived in Madinah, and I remained ill for a month. The talk of the false accusers had spread among the people. During my illness, one thing made me suspicious: I did not see from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the kindness I used to see during my previous illnesses. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come home, greet, and ask, "How are you?" But I knew nothing about the false accusation. I had become weak. One day, I and Umm Mistah went out to "Manasi'" (for relieving ourselves). That was our place for relieving ourselves, and we would only go there at night. At that time, there were no toilets near the houses; this was before such things. Our situation was like that of the earlier Arabs (i.e., we relieved ourselves in open places). I and Umm Mistah were walking back when her foot got entangled in her cloak, and she said, "May Mistah be ruined!" I said to her, "You have said a terrible thing! You have cursed a man who participated in the Battle of Badr." She said, "O naive woman, have you not heard what people are saying?" Then she told me what the false accusers had said. This increased my illness. When I returned home, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and asked, "How are you?" I said, "Allow me to go to my parents' house."
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: At that time, I wanted to ascertain the truth from both of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) allowed me, so I went to my parents' house and asked my mother, "What are people talking about?" She said, "O my daughter, be calm! By Allah, whenever a woman is beloved to her husband and she has co-wives, they tend to be jealous of her." I said, "SubhanAllah! Are people really saying this?" She replied, "Yes." I spent the whole night crying, and I did not sleep even for a moment. Then morning came.
When (for several days) the revelation ceased, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) to consult them about separating from his wife. Usama indicated what he knew, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) loved his wife very much, and said, "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, we know nothing but good about your wife." However, Ali said, "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has not put you in difficulty. There are many other women besides her. But you may ask the maid; she will tell you the truth." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Barirah and asked, "O Barirah, have you seen anything in her that would make you suspicious?" She said, "No, by the One Who sent you with the truth, I have seen nothing in her to criticize except that she is a young girl; she kneads dough and falls asleep, and the goat comes and eats it."
That day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up (to address the people) and complained about Abdullah bin Ubayy, saying, "Who will excuse me regarding a man whose harm has reached my wife? By Allah, I know nothing but good about my wife, and regarding the man they mention, I know nothing but good about him. He never entered my house except with me." Then Saad bin Muadh (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I will take revenge for you from him. If he is from the tribe of Aws, we will behead him, and if he is from our brothers, the Khazraj, then command us, and we will obey your order." Then Saad bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up—he was a righteous man, but tribal zeal overtook him—and said, "By Allah, you are lying! You will not kill him, nor can you do so." Then Usaid bin Hudair stood up and said, "You are lying! By Allah, we will surely kill him. You are a hypocrite, arguing on behalf of the hypocrites." Thus, a dispute arose between Aws and Khazraj, to the point that they were about to fight. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on the pulpit and kept calming them until they became quiet.
I spent that day crying, and I did not sleep even for a moment. In the morning, I was at my parents' house. I cried all night and the next day, until I felt as if my liver would burst from weeping. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: My parents were sitting with me while I was crying, when an Ansari woman asked permission to enter. I allowed her, and she sat down and cried with me. While we were in that state, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the house and sat down. Since the talk about me had started, he had never sat with me like this before. A month had passed, and no revelation had come regarding my matter. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the testimony of faith and said, "O Aisha, after praise to Allah, such-and-such has reached me about you. If you are innocent, Allah will declare your innocence, but if you have committed a sin, then seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him, for when a servant admits his sin and repents, Allah accepts his repentance." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished his words, my tears stopped, and I did not feel a single drop of tears. I said to my father, "Reply to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on my behalf." He said, "By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." I said to my mother, "Reply to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on my behalf." She said, "By Allah, I do not know what to say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I am a young girl and do not know much of the Quran, but I say: By Allah, I know that you have heard what people are saying, and it has settled in your mind and you have believed it. If I say I am innocent—and Allah knows I am innocent—you will not believe me. And if I admit to something about which Allah knows I am innocent, you will believe me. By Allah, I can find no example for myself and you except what the father of Yusuf (peace be upon him) said:
"Patience is most fitting, and Allah is the one sought for help against what you describe."
Then I lay down on my bed, hoping that Allah would reveal (a command) regarding my innocence. But by Allah, I did not think that revelation would come about my matter. In my view, I was too insignificant for Allah to speak about me in the Quran. I only hoped that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would see something in a dream that would declare my innocence. By Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not yet left his place, and none of the people in the house had left, when revelation began to descend upon him. At that time, the state would come upon him that would come during revelation, until even on a cold day, sweat would pour from his forehead like pearls. When the state of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ended, he was smiling. The first thing he said was, "O Aisha, praise Allah, for He has declared you innocent." My mother said to me, "Get up and go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." I said, "No, by Allah, I will not get up and go to him. I will only praise Allah." Then Allah revealed this verse:
"Indeed, those who came with the false accusation are a group among you..."
When Allah revealed the command regarding my innocence, Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), who used to spend on Mistah due to their kinship, said, "By Allah, after what Mistah has said about Aisha, I will never spend on him again." Then Allah revealed this verse:
"Let not those among you who are blessed and wealthy swear not to give to their relatives..."
Up to: "Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."
So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "By Allah, I love that Allah should forgive me." Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) resumed helping Mistah as he used to before.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) about me, and she said, "O Messenger of Allah, I protect my hearing and sight (from saying anything bad)."
Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: She used to compete with me, but Allah protected her (from slander) due to her piety.
