Imam Zain al-Abidin narrates this statement from Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhrama (may Allah be pleased with him): Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a marriage proposal for the daughter of Abu Jahl and made a promise of marriage. Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "The people of your tribe are saying that you do not get angry for the sake of your daughters; Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has sent a marriage proposal for the daughter of Abu Jahl." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fatima is a part of my flesh; whatever displeases her will displease me." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned Sayyiduna Abu al-As bin Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him) and praised him in good words. He said: "The daughter of the Prophet of Allah and the daughter of the enemy of Allah cannot be united (in marriage) to one man."
