Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I participated in the Battle of Hunayn with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). I remember about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that I was with him, and Abu Sufyan bin Harith bin Abdul Muttalib was also there. We remained with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); we did not separate from him. He was riding his white mule (here the narrator sometimes narrates a word differently). That mule was presented as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by Farwah bin Nufathah al-Judhami. When the Muslims and disbelievers confronted each other, the Muslims turned their backs and fled. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began urging his mule towards the disbelievers. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was holding the reins of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mule, trying to restrain it, which was wanting to advance towards the polytheists, while Abu Sufyan bin Harith was holding the stirrup of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O Abbas, call the people who pledged allegiance at Ridwan.” Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My voice was loud, so I called out in my loudest voice: “O people of the pledge of Ridwan!” By Allah, when they heard my voice, they came just as cows come towards their calves, and they were saying, “We are present, we are present.” Then the Muslims came and fought the disbelievers with me. Then the Ansar called out: “O group of Ansar!” Then this call was shortened to Banu Harith bin Khazraj, so they said: “O Banu Harith Khazraj!” The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was overseeing the battle while mounted on his mule. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Now the furnace of war has flared up.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a handful of pebbles and threw them towards the disbelievers and said: “By the Lord of the Ka’bah, they will be defeated! By the Lord of the Ka’bah, they will be defeated!” Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I began to observe, and the battle was continuing as I was seeing it. By Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had only just thrown a handful of pebbles towards them when I saw that they fled and turned their backs, until Allah caused them to be defeated. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It is as if I am still seeing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time, riding his mule, going after them.
