Ja'far bin Amr narrates: I and Ubaidullah bin Adi set out during the rule of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). We were traveling with people, and when we returned, we passed by Homs, where Sayyiduna Wahshi (may Allah be pleased with him) was present, who was the freed slave of Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him). He had settled there and was residing there. When we came to him, Ubaidullah bin Adi said to me: Are you interested that we go to Sayyiduna Wahshi (may Allah be pleased with him) and ask him about Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), how he martyred Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him)? The narrator says: So we set out and presented ourselves before him. He was sitting outside his house on a platform. He was an elderly old man. When we came to him, we greeted him, so he raised his head and looked towards Ubaidullah bin Adi and asked: Are you the son of Adi bin Khiyar? He replied: Yes. He said: By Allah, I saw you at the time when I handed you over to your foster mother from the tribe of Banu Sa'd, who nursed you at the place of Dhi Tuwa. I handed you over to that woman, and she was mounted on her camel. She took you when I lifted you up to her, and at that time your feet appeared before me. By Allah, just now when you stood before me, I saw your feet and recognized them. The narrator says: We sat with him. We said: We have come to you so that you may tell us about the killing of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), how you killed him. He said: I will narrate to you both just as I narrated to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he asked me about it. I was the slave of Jubair bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him). His uncle Tu'aymah bin Adi was killed in the Battle of Badr. When the Quraysh set out for Uhud, Jubair bin Mut'im said to me: If you kill Muhammad's uncle Hamza in revenge for my uncle Tu'aymah, you will be free. I set out from there. I was an Abyssinian man and used to throw a small spear in the manner of the Abyssinians, and rarely did my aim miss. When the battle started, I began to look for where Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) was, until I saw him among the people like a grey camel. He was driving people back with his sword; nothing was stopping him. By Allah, I was just about to go towards him when I was unable to do so because Siba' bin Abd al-Uzza had already reached him before me. When Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he said: Come forward, O son of the woman who circumcises women! Then he struck him, and by Allah, he cut off his head. Sayyiduna Wahshi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I prepared my spear, and when I was sure of my aim, I threw it. It struck him in the abdomen and came out between his legs. He tried to move towards me but was overpowered. I left him as he was until he passed away. Then I came to him and took my spear, then returned to the people and sat in the camp, for after that I had nothing else to do. I had killed him so that I would be set free. When I came to Mecca, I was set free.
