Habib bin Abu Malikah narrates: A man asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him): Was he present at the Battle of Badr? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: No. He asked: Was he present at the Pledge of Ridwan? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: No. He asked: Was he among those who turned back on the day when the two groups faced each other? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: Yes. That man said: Allahu Akbar, then he went away.

It was said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): What have you done? Now this man will go and tell people that you are criticizing Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him). So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Bring him to me. When that man came, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you remember what you asked me about? He replied: Yes. I asked you about Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him): Was he present at the Battle of Badr? You replied: No. So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) on some of his work at the time of the Battle of Badr, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fixed a share for Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) (in the spoils of Badr). The man said: I asked you whether he was present at the Pledge of Ridwan, and you replied: No. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent him on his personal work, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed one of his hands on the other (and pledged allegiance on behalf of Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him). So tell me, which hand was better: the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or the hand of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)? The man said: I asked you whether he was among those who turned back on the day when the two groups faced each other, and you replied: Yes. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Allah the Exalted has said:

“They slipped because of some of what they had done, but Allah has pardoned them. Surely Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.”

(Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said to that man) Now go and do your utmost.
