Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, the Quraysh did not find out about his acceptance of Islam. He said: O people of Makkah! Who among you is the most eloquent in speech (i.e., the wisest)? The people replied: Jameel bin Ma'mar Jumahi. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to him, and I was with him. I was walking behind him, and whatever I saw, I understood and heard. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to that person and said: O Jameel, I have accepted Islam. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: By Allah! He did not reply to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) until he went with him towards Masjid al-Haram, and among the gatherings of Quraysh, he announced: O group of Quraysh! The son of Khattab has become irreligious. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He has lied; rather, I have accepted Islam, and I have believed in Allah Almighty, and I have affirmed His Messenger. Then those people attacked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also started fighting with them, until the sun set over their heads (i.e., the fight continued for quite a while), until Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sat down separately. Those people were standing at the head of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do whatever you think is appropriate. By Allah! If we become three hundred people, then either you will leave it for us, or we will leave it for you. While those people were still standing by Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), a man came who was wearing a silk cloak and a Qumasi shirt. He inquired: What is the matter with you people? They replied: The son of Khattab has become irreligious. He said: Leave him, for a man has chosen a religion for himself. Do you think that Banu Adi will hand over their companion (i.e., one of their men) to you? The narrator says: It was as if a veil had been over their eyes, which was now lifted.
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Later, in Madinah Munawwarah, I asked Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Father, who was that person who turned the others away from you that day? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: O my son, that was As bin Wa'il.
