Ibn Hibban

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Indeed, when Allah the Exalted intends to show mercy to any nation among His servants, He takes the soul of their Prophet before them and makes that Prophet a forerunner and the first to go before them. And when He intends to destroy any nation, He afflicts them with punishment while their Prophet is still alive, so He cools the eyes of that Prophet through the destruction of those people, when they declare that Prophet to be a liar and disobey his command.”
