Hadith 6606
Urwah bin Zubair narrates: Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed him: The daughter of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), sent a message to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and demanded from him the inheritance of the Prophet (peace be upon him) which Allah Almighty had granted to the Prophet (peace be upon him) as fay (spoils of war) in Madinah, and what was granted in Fadak, and from what remained from the khums (one-fifth) of Khaybar (she demanded inheritance from that as well). So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, we (i.e., the Prophets) do not leave inheritance to be distributed; whatever we leave behind is charity. The family of Muhammad (peace be upon him) will eat from this wealth."
(Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) By Allah! I will not change anything regarding the charity of the Prophet (peace be upon him) from the way it was during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and I will use it in the same way as the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to use it. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) refused to give anything from it to Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). At this, Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) became upset with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and cut off relations with him. After the passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away after a few months. During this period, she did not speak to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). When she passed away, her husband Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) buried her at night. He did not inform Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about this. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) himself led the funeral prayer for Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). During the lifetime of Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), people still maintained relations with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), but when Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away, people became distant from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). So Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) expressed his intention to reconcile with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and to pledge allegiance to him, even though during those months he had not pledged allegiance. He sent a message to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to come to them and that no one else should come with him. In fact, he did not like that Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) should also be present at that time. So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): By Allah! You will not go to them alone. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They will not do anything bad to me. By Allah! I will surely go to them. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to them. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the testimony of faith and said: O Abu Bakr! We are aware of your virtue and of what Allah Almighty has granted you. We do not deny any good that Allah Almighty has given you, but you have been unjust to us in the matter of leadership. We think that due to our closeness to the Prophet (peace be upon him), we were more deserving of it. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) continued to talk with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) until tears flowed from Abu Bakr’s (may Allah be pleased with him) eyes. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to speak, he said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, to maintain good relations with the relatives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is more beloved to me than maintaining good relations with my own relatives and family. As for the matter of the wealth over which there has arisen a difference between me and you, I have not turned away from what is good regarding it, and I have done only what I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) doing regarding it." So Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): The promise for allegiance is for the evening. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had performed the Zuhr prayer, he ascended the pulpit. He recited the testimony of faith, then mentioned the matter of Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and his delay in pledging allegiance, and mentioned the excuse that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had presented to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) recited a prayer for forgiveness (and ended his speech). Then Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the testimony of faith. He declared the right and honor of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to be great and explained that what he had done was not out of anger with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) or denial of the virtue that Allah Almighty had granted him, but in the matter of leadership, we thought that we should also have a share, so in this regard, we felt wronged. Therefore, there was some confusion in our minds. At this, the Muslims became happy. They said: You have spoken rightly. When Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) turned to enjoining good, the Muslims also drew close to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
