Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) became ill, he said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stands in your place, due to weeping, he will not be able to make the people hear the recitation. Please order Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." I repeated the same thing, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." I said to Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her): "You say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stands in your place, due to weeping, he will not be able to make the people hear the recitation. Please order Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to do so." Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) did so, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. You women are like those women in the story of Yusuf (peace be upon him)." Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) said (to Lady Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her): "I have never seen any good coming from your side."
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to lead the people in prayer. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had said the takbir, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also came out. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him to stay in his place, so Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) remained in his place. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and sat beside him. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was following the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people were following the prayer of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), until they completed the prayer.
