Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid bin Haritha (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) rode on a donkey which had a saddle on it and there was a sheet underneath it. He seated Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them both) behind him. He went towards the locality of Banu Harith to visit Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) who was ill. This incident took place before the Battle of Badr. The Prophet passed by a gathering in which some Muslims, polytheists, idol worshippers, and Jews were sitting. Among them was Abdullah bin Ubayy. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawaha (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present in that gathering. When the dust from the animal’s feet reached that gathering, Abdullah placed his sheet over his nose and then said: “Do not scatter dust upon us.” The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted those people with salam and stayed with them. He invited them towards Allah and recited the Qur’an before them. Abdullah bin Ubayy said: “O man, if what you are saying is true, then it is more appropriate that you do not cause us discomfort in our gathering. Please go to your place of residence. Whoever among us comes to you, you may say all this to him.” Upon this, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawaha (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Rather, you should come to us in our gatherings. We like this.” At this, there was a dispute between the Muslims, polytheists, and Jews, to the extent that they intended to fight. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) kept trying to calm them down until they became silent. Then the Prophet mounted his ride and went to Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: “Did you hear what Abu Hubab said?” The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) meant Abdullah bin Ubayy. He said this, so Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon you), please forgive him. By Allah! Before Allah granted you the status and rank that He has, the people of this place had agreed to make him their chief. But when Allah fulfilled this wish through your arrival, he became envious of it. That is why he adopted the behavior you have witnessed.” (The narrator says:) So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forgave that person.
