Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We set out on a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until we camped in the valley of Afih. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself. I followed him carrying a water vessel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked around but did not find anything with which he could screen himself. There were two trees at the edge of the valley. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to one of them, took hold of a branch, and said, "Come with me by the command of Allah." So the tree moved with him like an obedient camel, just as a camel follows the command of the one leading it, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the other tree. He took hold of a branch of that tree and said, "Come with me by the command of Allah." So it too moved with him in the same way, until, when he came between them, the two trees joined together. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Join together for me by the command of Allah," so they joined together.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I moved back a little, fearing that if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed my nearness, he might go farther away. I sat down there. After a short while, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned; the trees had separated from each other, and each was standing on its own trunk. I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pause for a moment and turn his head to the left and right, then he came to me. When he reached me, he asked, "O Jabir, did you see me?" I replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Go to those two trees, break off a branch from each, and bring them to me. When you reach the place where you saw me standing, leave one branch on your right and one on your left." Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I took a stone and broke it into two pieces. Then I went to those two trees, broke off a branch from each, and dragged them until I reached the place where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had stood. I placed one branch on my right and one on my left, then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I have done as you commanded. Why did you ask me to do this?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I passed by two graves whose occupants were being punished, so I wished that their punishment be lightened for them through my intercession as long as these branches remain fresh." The narrator says: Then we came to the army, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Jabir, announce for ablution water." So I announced, "Attention! There is water for ablution."
I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I did not find even a drop of water in the army." (The narrator says:) There was a man from the Ansar who used to keep cool water for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his bucket. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Go to that Ansari and see if there is any water in his bucket." The narrator says: I went to that man and checked his bucket; I found only a single drop of water at the edge of the bucket. If I had poured it out, it would not have been enough to drink. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I found only a single drop in the bucket, which was at its edge. If I had poured it out, the dry part would have absorbed it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Go and bring it to me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) poured that drop onto his blessed hand and began to recite something. I do not know what it was. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to rub it with his blessed hand, then he gave it to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Jabir, announce for a bowl." So I said, "Let someone bring a bowl." The narrator says: I brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and placed it before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did this: he extended his hand into the middle of the bowl and spread his fingers. He said, "O Jabir, take it and pour it over me, and say 'Bismillah'." I poured it over the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said 'Bismillah.' I saw water gushing from between the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until the vessel was full. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Jabir, announce that whoever needs water should come." The narrator says: So the people came, drank the water, and were satisfied. The narrator says: I then announced, "Is there anyone who still needs water?" The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lifted his blessed hand from the bowl, and it was still full.
