Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the Friday sermon leaning on a piece of wood. He would rest his back against it. When the crowd of people increased, he said: "Make a pulpit for me." So the people made a pulpit with two steps for him. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on the pulpit to deliver the sermon, that piece of wood began to weep at being separated from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was present in the mosque at that time. I heard the sound of that piece of wood, as if a child was crying, and it continued to cry until the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) descended and went to it and embraced it (when he embraced it), it became calm.
The narrator says: When Hasan al-Basri used to narrate this tradition, he would begin to weep and say: O servants of Allah! A piece of wood weeps out of love for the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), because of the rank and status that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has in the presence of Allah. So you are even more deserving that you should long to be present in the court of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
