Abu Hazim narrates: I asked Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him): Did the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) ever eat bread made from sifted flour? Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: From the time Allah Almighty sent the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a messenger until his passing, he never ate bread made from sifted flour. I asked: Did you people not have sieves during the blessed time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? He replied: From the time the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent as a messenger until his passing, he never saw a sieve. I asked: Then how did you eat barley without sifting it? He replied: We would grind it and then blow on it; whatever was meant to fly away would fly away, and whatever remained, we would cook and eat.
