Ibrahim narrates: Alqamah went to Syria, where he entered the mosque and performed two rak‘ahs, then supplicated: O Allah! Grant me a righteous companion. Then he went to the service of Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him), who asked: Where are you from? He replied: From Kufa. He asked: Are there not among you the special confidants of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to whom no one else knew his secrets, and he is Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him)? Is he not among you? And is there not among you the one whom Allah, through the tongue of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), declared protected from Satan, and he is Sayyiduna ‘Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him)? Is there not among you the dark-skinned man, Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him)? Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: How do you recite this verse: «و اللیل إِذَا يَغْشَى وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّى»? I said: «وَالذَّكَرِ وَالْاُنْثٰى». Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: These people have constantly caused me to doubt about this, although I myself heard this verse (in this way) from the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
