Permissibility of taking a pre-agreed fee for ruqyah
Hadith 6112
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ السَّخْتِيَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ ، فَمَرَرْنَا عَلَى أَهْلِ أَبْيَاتٍ ، فَاسْتَضَفْنَاهُمْ ، فَأَبَوْا أَنْ يُضَيِّفُونَا ، فَنَزَلُوا بِالْعَرَاءِ ، فَلُدِغَ سَيِّدُهُمْ ، فَأَتَوْنَا فَقَالُوا : هَلْ فِيكُمْ أَحَدٌ يَرْقِي ؟ قَالَ : قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ ، أَنَا أَرْقِي ، قَالُوا : ارْقِ صَاحِبَنَا ، قُلْتُ : لا ، قَدِ اسْتَضَفْنَاكُمْ فَأَبَيْتُمْ أَنْ تُضَيِّفُونَا ، قَالُوا : فَإِنَّا نَجْعَلُ لَكُمْ جُعْلا ، قَالَ : فَجَعَلُوا لِي ثَلاثِينَ شَاةً ، قَالَ : فَأَتَيْتُهُ ، فَجَعَلْتُ أَمْسَحُهُ ، وَأَقْرَأُ بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ حَتَّى بَرَأَ ، فَأَخَذْنَا الشَّاءَ ، فَقُلْنَا : نَأْخُذُهَا وَنَحْنُ لا نُحْسِنُ نَرْقِي ؟ فَمَا نَحْنُ بِالَّذِي نَأْكُلُهَا حَتَّى نَسْأَلَ عَنْهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَتَيْنَاهُ ، فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، قَالَ : فَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ : " وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ أَنَّهَا رُقْيَةٌ ؟ " قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا دَرَيْتُ أَنَّهَا رُقْيَةٌ ، شَيْءٌ أَلْقَاهُ اللَّهُ فِي نَفْسِي ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كُلُوا ، وَاضْرِبُوا لِيَّ مَعَكُمْ بِسَهْمٍ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent us on an expedition. We passed by a village and asked them for hospitality, but they refused to host us. We camped at a place outside the settlement. The chief of those people was bitten by something poisonous. They came to us and said: Is there anyone among you who can perform ruqyah (spiritual healing)? I said: Yes, I perform ruqyah. They said: Please perform ruqyah for our companion. I said: No, we had asked you for hospitality, but you refused to host us. They said: We will give you a reward for it. The narrator says: So they agreed to give us thirty (30) goats. I went to that man, started passing my hand over him, and began reciting Surah Al-Fatihah as ruqyah, until the man was cured. So we received the goats. We thought: We have taken the goats, but we do not formally know how to perform ruqyah, so we will not eat from these goats until we ask the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about it. Then we presented ourselves before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned this matter to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: How did you know that Surah Al-Fatihah can be used as ruqyah? I replied: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I did not know that it can be used as ruqyah; it was just something that Allah put into my mind. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Eat from it, and set aside a share for me as well.
Hadith 6113
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ أَخِيهِ مَعْبَدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، قَالَ : نَزَلْنَا مَنْزِلا ، فَأَتَتْنَا امْرَأَةٌ ، فَقَالَتْ : إِنَّ سَيِّدَ الْحَيِّ سُلَيْمٌ لُدِغَ ، فَهَلْ فِيكُمْ مِنْ رَاقٍ ؟ فَقَالَ : فَقَامَ مَعَهَا رَجُلٌ مِنَّا ، كُنَّا نَظُنُّهُ يُحْسِنُ رُقْيَةً ، فَرَقَى بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ فَبَرَأَ ، فَأَعْطَوْهُ غَنَمًا ، وَسَقَوْهُ لَبَنًا ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ لا تُحَرِّكُوهُ حَتَّى نَأْتِيَ نَأْتِيَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " مَا كَانَ يُدْرِيهِ أَنَّهَا رُقْيَةٌ ؟ اقْسِمُوا وَاضْرِبُوا لِي بِسَهْمٍ مَعَكُمْ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We camped at a place and a woman came to us and said: The chief of this tribe has been bitten by something poisonous, is there anyone among you who can perform ruqyah (spiritual healing)? The narrator says: So one of us got up and went with her. We used to think that he was good at performing ruqyah. He recited Surah Al-Fatihah and performed ruqyah, and the man was cured. They gave us sheep and also gave us milk to drink. The narrator says: I said: Do not touch them until we present this matter to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then we went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and mentioned this to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: How did you know that this Surah can be used for ruqyah? You people may distribute them and keep my share with yours.
