Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: ‘Amir bin Rabi’ah, who belonged to Banu ‘Adi bin Ka’b, saw Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) who was at that time at the place of Kharrar with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He began to bathe, so ‘Amir bin Rabi’ah said: “By Allah! I have not seen even a veiled woman with such beautiful skin.” At that very moment, Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill. He was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and it was said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Will you do something for Sahl bin Hunaif? He cannot even lift his head.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you accuse anyone?” The people said: “Yes, ‘Amir bin Rabi’ah saw him bathing and said: ‘By Allah! I have not seen even a veiled woman with such good skin.’” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called ‘Amir bin Rabi’ah and, expressing anger towards him, said: “Why does one of you want to kill his brother? Could you not have prayed for blessing for him? You must perform ghusl (ritual washing) for him.” ‘Amir performed ghusl for him, and Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) departed with the riders as if he had no ailment (i.e., his illness was gone). The narrator states: The method of performing ghusl is that a bowl is brought, the person performing ghusl puts both his hands into it, then he washes his face in the bowl (i.e., the water used to wash the face falls back into the bowl), then he puts his right hand into it and washes his chest in the bowl, then he puts his hand in and washes his back, then he takes his left hand and does the same, then he washes both knees in the same way and washes up to the tips of his fingers, then he does the same with his left foot, then before placing the vessel on the ground, he gives it to the person who has been afflicted by the evil eye, then that person rinses his mouth with it, pours the water over his face, pours it over his head, and then turns the bowl upside down behind his back.
