Section on Distant Relatives - Reason for the Prophet’s action as described
Hadith 6039
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَوْنٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَمَّارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبِي بُرَيْدَةَ ، يَقُولُ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَخْطُبُنَا ، إِذْ جَاءَ الْحَسَنُ ، وَالْحُسَيْنُ ، عَلَيْهِمَا قَمِيصَانِ أَحْمَرَانِ يَمْشِيَانِ ، وَيَعْثُرَانِ ، فَنَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الْمِنْبَرِ ، فَحَمَلَهُمَا ، فَوَضَعَهُمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " صَدَقَ اللَّهُ : إِنَّمَا أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَأَوْلادُكُمْ فِتْنَةٌ سورة التغابن آية 15 " ، نَظَرْتُ إِلَى هَذَيْنِ الصَّبِيَّيْنِ يَمْشِيَانِ وَيَعْثُرَانِ ، فَلَمْ أَصْبِرْ ، حَتَّى قَطَعْتُ حَدِيثِي فَرَفَعَتْهُمَا .
Sayyiduna Abu Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering a sermon to us when Sayyiduna Imam Hasan and Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both), who were children, came. They were wearing red shirts. They would walk and stumble as they walked. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit, picked them both up, and seated them in front of him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty has spoken the truth: "Indeed, your wealth and your children are a trial." I saw these two children walking and stumbling, and I could not be patient, so I interrupted my speech and picked them up.
