Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Farewell Hajj, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me because my illness had become severe. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! You can see the state of my illness. I am a wealthy man and my only heir is my one daughter. Should I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: No. I said: Half? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: No. Then he (peace be upon him) said: Give one-third, and even one-third is much (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) — it is a lot. If you leave your heirs wealthy, that is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. Whatever you spend seeking Allah’s pleasure, you will be rewarded for it, even what you put in your wife’s mouth (you will be rewarded for that too). I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Will I be left behind by my companions? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: You will not be left behind. Whatever good deed you do seeking Allah’s pleasure, as a result your rank and status will be increased. It may be that you will live a long life, so that many people will benefit from you and many people will suffer harm because of you. O Allah! Let the migration of my companions remain, and do not turn them back on their heels. But Sa’d bin Khawlah — alas for him.
(The narrator says:) The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) expressed sorrow for him because he died in Makkah.
