Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were sitting with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when he asked, “Who among you remembers the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding tribulations?” I replied, “I do.” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “You are worthy (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words), you have shown courage. What did the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say?” So Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: ‘A man is tested in regard to himself, his family, his wealth, his children, and his neighbor. Fasting, giving charity, praying, enjoining good, and forbidding evil are expiations for these.’” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I do not mean this. I mean the tribulation which will be like the waves of the sea.” I said, “O Commander of the Believers, what do you have to do with that? Between you and it is a closed door.” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, “Will the door be broken or opened?” I replied, “No, it will be broken.” And then it will be such that it will never be closed again.
The narrator says: We asked Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), “Did Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) know what was meant by the door?” He replied, “Yes, just as he knew that night comes before tomorrow.” (The narrator says) Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) never narrated to us any hadith in which he was mistaken.
The narrator says: We did not have the courage to ask him what was meant by the door, so we said to Masruq, “You ask him.” Masruq asked him, and he replied, “(By the door) is meant Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).”
