Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this incident in the shade of the Ka'bah: Once, we were traveling with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Some of us were practicing archery, some were grazing animals, and some were fixing tents. During this time, it was announced that the prayer was about to begin. We gathered together, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering a sermon. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Every prophet before me, it was incumbent upon Allah to guide his nation towards that which was best for them and to warn them against those things which he knew would be harmful for them. As for this Ummah, its well-being is in its early period, and its latter period will face trials. A trial will come to a believer, and he will say, “I will perish in this,” then another will come, and he will say, “I will perish in this,” then that too will pass. So whoever among you wishes to be saved from Hell and admitted to Paradise, his death should come to him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and he should treat people in the same way that he would like to be treated. Whoever gives allegiance to a ruler and gives him his hand and his willingness, then he must obey that ruler as much as he can. The narrator says: I said, “This is your cousin, Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he tells us: We should unjustly consume each other's wealth and shed blood, while Allah the Exalted has said, ‘O you who believe! Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly,’ and Allah the Exalted has said, ‘Do not kill one another.’” The narrator says: He (i.e., Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr, may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent for a while, then he said: Obey them in matters of obedience to Allah, and do not obey them in matters of disobedience to Allah.
