Evidence that sacrifice is not a religious obligation
Hadith 5915
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو صَخْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ قُسَيْطٍ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، أن رسول اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُتِيَ بِكَبْشٍ أَقْرَنَ يَطَأُ فِي سَوَادٍ ، وَيَنْظُرُ فِي سَوَادٍ ، وَيَبْرُكُ فِي سَوَادٍ ، فَأَتَى بِهِ لِيُضَحِّيَ بِهِ ، قَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا عَائِشَةُ ، هَلُمِّي الْمُدْيَةَ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " حُدِّيهَا بِحَجَرٍ " ، فَفَعَلْتُ ، فَأَخَذَهَا وَأَخَذَ الْكَبْشَ ، فَأَضْجَعَهُ ، ثُمَّ ذَبَحَهُ ، وَقَالَ : " بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ، اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ ، مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَمِنْ أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ " ، ثُمَّ ضَحَّى بِهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: A ram with horns was brought to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), which had black marks on its legs, around its eyes, and near its back. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to it in order to sacrifice it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aisha! Hand me the knife." Then he said: "Sharpen it on a stone." I did so. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) took the knife, caught the ram, laid it down, and slaughtered it. He said: "In the name of Allah, seeking blessing from Him. O Allah, in Your name, seeking blessing from You, on behalf of Muhammad, the family of Muhammad, and the Ummah of Muhammad (I am sacrificing this)." Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed it.
