Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at Dhul-Hulaifah. The people were hungry. We found some camels and goats. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was coming behind the people. The people quickly slaughtered them and put the pots on the fire. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached them, the pots were overturned by his order. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began to distribute them, so ten goats were given in place of one camel as a share for one man. Among them, one camel became unruly. The people had few horses. They ran after the camel, but became tired (and could not catch it). One man shot an arrow at it and forced it to stop. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Among these animals, some behave like wild animals. If any of them becomes unruly, then treat it in this manner.
(The narrator says:) My grandfather said: We hope that tomorrow we will face the enemy. We do not have knives. Can we slaughter with bamboo? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whatever causes blood to flow, and over which the name of Allah is mentioned at the time of slaughter, eat it, except that which is slaughtered with a bone or with the special knife of the Abyssinians.
(The narrator says:) I will tell you about this: the word “san” means bone, and the word “zafar” means the special knife of the Abyssinians.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) This narration contains evidence that one camel is sufficient as a sacrifice on behalf of ten people. This has been stated by the Shaykh.
