Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he hunts with his arrow, and sometimes the arrow strikes the prey, but after one or two days he finds that prey. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: If you find it in such a condition that there is no mark or wound on it except the mark of your arrow, then eat it. But if you find any other mark on it besides the mark of your arrow, then do not eat it. If you release your dog and mention the name of Allah, and you find the prey and the dog has not killed it, then slaughter it. If you find it in such a condition that the dog has killed it and has not eaten anything from it, then eat it. But if you find it in such a condition that the dog has eaten from it, then do not eat it, because the dog hunted it for itself. Sayyiduna ‘Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: If I release my dog and mention the name of Allah, and then another dog joins my dog and both hunt and kill the prey, then the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Do not eat it, because you do not know whether your dog killed it or the other dog killed it.
