Chapter on Play and Amusement – Permissibility for a free woman to watch the Ethiopians’ play, even if married
Hadith 5868
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَلْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، أَنَّ ابْنَ شِهَابٍ حَدَّثَهُ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا جَارِيَتَانِ فِي أَيَّامِ مِنًى تُغَنِّيَانِ ، وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُسَجًّى بِثَوْبِهِ ، فَانْتَهَرَهُمَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، فَكَشَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْهُ وَقَالَ : " دَعْهُمَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، فَإِنَّهَا أَيَّامُ عِيدٍ " ، قَالَتْ : وَرَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْتُرُنِي بِرِدَائِهِ ، وَأَنَا أَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْحَبَشَةِ ، وَهُمْ يَلْعَبُونَ وَأَنَا جَارِيَةٌ ، فَاقْدُرُوا قَدْرَ الْجَارِيَةِ الْعَرِبَةِ الْحَدِيثَةِ السِّنِّ .
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Once, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to her place, and at that time, two girls were sitting with her who were singing. This was on the occasion of Eid. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had covered his face with a cloth. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) scolded those girls, so the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) removed the cloth from his face and said: O Abu Bakr! Let them sing, for these are the days of Eid.
Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I remember this about the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that he had covered me with his cloak as a screen, and I was watching the Abyssinians who were performing tricks. At that time, I was a young girl, so you can imagine how much interest a young girl, who is not very old, would have in watching such tricks.
