Chapter on Images and Image-makers – Obligation to avoid making images of anything in this world
Hadith 5859
أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ الْقَعْقَاعِ ، عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ ، قَالَ : دَخَلْتُ أَنَا ، وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ دَارًا لِسَعِيدٍ ، أَوْ لِمَرْوَانَ ، فَرَأَى مُصَوِّرًا يُصَوِّرُ فِي الْجِدَارِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : قَالَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى : " مَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ ذَهَبَ يَخْلُقُ كَخَلْقِي ، فَلْيَخْلُقُوا حَبَّةً ، أَوْ لِيَخْلُقُوا ذَرَّةً " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : قَوْلُهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَلْيَخْلُقُوا حَبَّةٍ ، أَوْ لِيَخْلُقُوا ذَرَّةً " ، مِنْ أَلْفَاظِ الأَوَامِرِ الَّتِي مُرَادُهَا التَّعْجِيزُ .
Abu Zar’ah narrates: I and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the house of Sa’id or perhaps Marwan (the ruler by that name), and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a picture drawn on the wall. He then related that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty says: “Who could be more unjust than the one who tries to create like My creation? They should try to create a grain, or produce a particle.” (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): They should try to create a grain, or produce a particle—here the words are in the imperative form, but what is meant by this is to render the opponent helpless.
