Chapter on Names and Nicknames – Second narration clarifying that the Prophet changed names for optimism, not pessimism
Hadith 5827
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَبِي إِسْرَائِيلَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " لا يَتَطَيَّرُ مِنَ شَيْءٍ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ ، إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ أَرْضًا سَأَلَ عَنِ اسْمِهَا ، فَإِنْ كَانَ حَسَنًا رُؤيَ الْبِشْرُ فِي وَجْهِهِ ، وَإِنْ كَانَ قَبِيحًا رُؤيَ ذَلِكَ فِي وَجْهِهِ " .
Ibn Buraidah narrates from his father that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not seek omens from anything. However, it was his practice that when he would come to a place, he would inquire about the name of that place. If its name was good, its effect would be visible on his face, and if its name was bad, that effect would also be visible on his face.
