Chapter on Names and Nicknames – The reason for discouraging this action
Hadith 5813
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بِحَرَّانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا النُّفَيْلِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ الطَّوِيلِ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ قَائِمًا بِالْبَقِيعِ ، فَنَادَى رَجُلٌ آخَرُ : يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ، فَالْتَفَتَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : لَمْ أَعْنِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّمَا دَعَوْتُ فُلانًا ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " تَسَمَّوْا بِاسْمِي ، وَلا تَكَنَّوْا بِكُنْيَتِي " .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing in Baqi‘ when a man called out loudly to another: “O Abu al-Qasim!” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards him, so the man said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I did not call you, I called so-and-so.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Name yourselves after my name, but do not take my kunyah.”
