Chapter on Joking and Laughing – Description of praiseworthy clarity in speech
Hadith 5796
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ بِدِمَشْقَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ سَهْلٍ الرَّمْلِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُتْبَةُ بْنُ السَّكَنِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " الْبَيَانُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ، وَالْعِيُّ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ ، وَلَيْسَ الْبَيَانُ كَثْرَةَ الْكَلامِ ، وَلَكِنَّ الْبَيَانَ الْفَصْلُ فِي الْحَقِّ ، وَلَيْسَ الْعِيُّ قِلَّةَ الْكَلامِ ، وَلَكِنْ مَنْ سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Eloquence is from Allah, and inability is from Satan. Eloquence does not mean excessive speech, rather eloquence means to distinguish between the truth. And inability does not mean speaking little, rather it is to act foolishly in matters of truth.”
