Chapter on Poetry and Rhymed Prose – Permissibility of reciting poetry as long as it contains no obscenity or indecency
Hadith 5781
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَوْنٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ السَّعْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : " جَالَسْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ مِائَةِ مَرَّةٍ ، فَكَانَ أَصْحَابُهُ يَتَنَاشَدُونَ الشِّعْرَ وَيَتَذَاكَرُونَ أَشْيَاءَ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَهُوَ سَاكِتٌ ، وَرُبَّمَا تَبَسَّمَ مَعَهُمْ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates: I have sat with the Prophet (peace be upon him) more than a hundred times. The companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite poetry to each other and mention incidents from the days of ignorance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would sit silently. Sometimes, he (peace be upon him) would smile along with them.
