Chapter on Poetry and Rhymed Prose – Warning against being so absorbed in poetry that it distracts from obligations and some voluntary acts
Hadith 5779
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَرُوبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ ذَكْوَانَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " لأَنْ يَمْتَلِئَ جَوْفُ أَحَدِكُمْ قَيْحًا حَتَّى يَرِيَهُ ، خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَمْتَلِئَ شِعْرًا " .
Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "For a person to have his stomach completely filled with pus is better for him than to fill it with poetry."
