Chapter on Praise – The reason for discouraging this action
Hadith 5767
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَبَابَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : مَدَحَ رَجُلٌ رَجُلا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " وَيْحَكَ ! قَطَعْتَ عُنُقَ صَاحِبِكَ " مِرَارًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " إِنْ كَانَ أَحَدُكُمْ مَادِحًا أَخَاهُ لا مَحَالَةَ ، فَلْيَقُلْ : أَحْسِبُ فُلانًا ، وَلا أُزَكِّي عَلَى اللَّهِ أَحَدًا " .
Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man praised another man in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Woe to you, you have cut your brother’s neck. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this several times. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If any person has to praise his brother, he should say: Regarding such-and-such person, I think such-and-such, but I do not declare anyone pure before Allah.
