Chapter on Disliked and Permissible Speech – On clarifying that the tongue is among the most feared things for a person; may Allah protect us
Hadith 5700
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَحْطَبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبَانَ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَاعِزٍ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الثَّقَفِيِّ ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ حَدِّثْنِي بِأَمْرٍ أَعْتَصِمُ بِهِ ، قَالَ : " قُلْ : رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا أَشَدُّ تَخَافُ عَلَيَّ ؟ " فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِلِسَانِ نَفْسِهِ " .
Sufyan bin Abdullah Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Tell me about something which I may hold firmly." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Say: My Lord is Allah, and then remain steadfast." The narrator says: I asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! What do you fear most for me?" So the Prophet (peace be upon him) held his tongue and said: "This."
