Chapter on Disliked and Permissible Speech – On the Prophet’s fear for his ummah regarding their tongues
Hadith 5698
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ قُتَيْبَةَ اللَّخْمِيُّ بِعَسْقَلانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي سُوَيْدٍ ، أَنَّ جَدَّهُ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الثَّقَفِيَّ ، قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، حَدِّثْنِي بِأَمْرٍ أَعْتَصِمُ بِهِ ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " قُلْ : رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ " ، قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، مَا أَكْثَرُ مَا تَخَافُ عَلَيَّ ؟ قَالَ : " هَذَا ، وَأَشَارَ إِلَى لِسَانِهِ " .
Sufyan bin Abdullah Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: He said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Tell me about something which I may hold firmly." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Say, 'My Lord is Allah,' and then remain steadfast upon it." He said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Of what do you fear most concerning me?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) pointed towards his tongue and said this.
