Hadith 5684
أَخْبَرَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْعَطَّارُ بِالْبَصْرَةِ ، حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ ، أَنَّ فَتًى مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ أَتَى أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، إِنَّكَ تُكْثِرُ الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَهَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ يَقُولُ فِي حُلَّتِي هَذِهِ ؟ فَقَالَ : لَوْلا مَا أَخَذَ اللَّهُ عَلَيَّ فِي الْكِتَابِ ، مَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ ، سَمِعْتُهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّ رَجُلاً مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ يَتَبَخْتَرُ ، إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْهُ جُمَّتُهُ وَبُرْدَاهُ ، فَخَسَفَ اللَّهُ بِهِ الأَرْضَ ، فَهُوَ يَتَجَلْجَلُ فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man from the Quraysh came to Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: “You narrate many ahadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); have you heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say anything about this cloak of mine?” So Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: “If it were not for the command that Allah Almighty has mentioned in His Book, I would not narrate any hadith to you people. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘Among those before you, there was a man who was walking arrogantly; his hair and his garments had made him conceited. Allah Almighty caused the earth to swallow him up, and he will continue to sink in it until the Day of Resurrection.’”
