Chapter on Humility, Arrogance, and Conceit – On the prohibition of leaning on the left hand behind the back while sitting
Hadith 5674
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَرُوبَةَ بِحَرَّانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الشَّرِيدِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ الشَّرِيدِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : مَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَأَنَا جَالِسٌ قَدْ وَضَعْتُ يَدِي الْيُسْرَى خَلْفَ ظَهْرِي ، وَاتَّكَأْتُ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَتَقْعُدُ قِعْدَةَ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ ؟ " ، قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ : وَضَعَ رَاحَتَيْهِ عَلَى الأَرْضِ وَرَاءَ ظَهْرِهِ .
Sayyiduna Shuraid bin Suwaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me while I was sitting. I had placed my left hand behind my back and was leaning on it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Are you sitting in this manner? The way those people sit upon whom wrath has been sent down. Ibn Jurayj has narrated these words: They had placed their palms on the ground behind their backs.
