Hadith 5662
‘Awf bin Harith, who was a close relative of Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) related that once, upon her selling something or giving something as a gift, ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “By Allah, either Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) will stop doing this, or I will prevent her from disposing of her property.”
When this statement reached Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: “In the name of Allah, it is now incumbent upon me by vow that I will never speak to ‘Abdullah bin Zubair.” When her estrangement from him became prolonged, ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) sent a recommendation to her. Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “By Allah, I will not accept anyone’s intercession regarding him, and I will never break the vow I have made.” When a long time had passed, ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) spoke to Miswar bin Makhramah and ‘Abdur Rahman bin Aswad about this. Both of these gentlemen belonged to Banu Zuhrah. ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to them: “I implore you both by Allah to take me to Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), for it is not permissible for her to make a vow in which she severs ties with me.” So Miswar bin Makhramah and ‘Abdur Rahman bin Aswad took ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) with them. Both of them threw their cloaks over him and sought permission from Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) to enter. They said: “Peace be upon the Prophet, O Mother of the Believers! May we come in?” Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: “You both may come in.” They said: “May we all come in?” Lady ‘A’ishah replied: “Yes, you all may come in.” Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) did not know that ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) was with them. When they entered, ‘Abdullah bin Zubair removed the covering and presented himself before Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). He embraced her and, weeping, began to plead with her. Miswar bin Makhramah and ‘Abdur Rahman also pleaded with Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said to her: “The conduct you have adopted, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it. It is not permissible for any Muslim to remain estranged from his brother for more than three days.” When both of them admonished and advised Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) at length, she began to remind them and started to weep, saying: “I have made a vow, and the matter of a vow is severe.” But both of them continued to speak with her until Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) began to converse with ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both). Then Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) freed forty slaves as expiation for her vow. Even after freeing forty slaves, she would continue to weep until her shawl would become wet with her tears.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was the maternal aunt of ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both), because the mother of ‘Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both), Lady Asma’ bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), was the sister of Lady ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
