Chapter on Killing Animals – On the reason for the command to kill geckos
Hadith 5631
أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى السَّخْتِيَانِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ سَائِبَةَ مَوْلاةٍ لِفَاكِهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، أَنَّهَا دَخَلَتْ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ ، فَرَأَتْ فِي بَيْتِهَا رُمْحًا مَوْضُوعَةً ، فَقَالَتْ : يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، مَا تَصْنَعِينَ بِهَذَا ؟ قَالَتْ : نَقْتُلُ بِهِ الأَوْزَاغَ ، فَإِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخْبَرَنَا " أَنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لَمَّا أُلْقِيَ فِي النَّارِ ، لَمْ يَكُنْ فِي الأَرْضِ دَابَّةٌ إِلا أَطْفَأَتِ النَّارَ عَنْهُ غَيْرَ الْوَزَغُ ، فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَنْفُخُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِقَتْلِهِ " .
A woman named Saibah narrates: She went to the service of Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she saw a spear placed in the house of Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). She inquired: O Mother of the Believers, what do you do with this? Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: We use it to kill lizards, because the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) told us this: When Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) was thrown into the fire, every animal on the face of the earth tried to extinguish that fire except the lizard; it was blowing on it (so that the fire would flare up more). So the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered it to be killed.
