Section on Torture – On the reason for the prohibition of this act
Hadith 5605
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا ضَرَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَجْتَنِبِ الْوَجْهَ ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ خَلَقَ آدَمَ عَلَى صُورَتِهِ " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : يُرِيدُ بِهِ صُورَةَ الْمَضْرُوبِ ، لأَنَّ الضَّارِبَ إِذَا ضَرَبَ وَجْهَ أَخِيهِ الْمُسْلِمِ ، ضَرَبَ وَجْهًا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ آدَمَ عَلَى صُورَتِهِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When a person beats (another), he should avoid the face, because Allah Almighty created Sayyiduna Adam, peace be upon him, in His image."
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) What is meant by this is: the person who is being beaten, his appearance is (in accordance with) the image of Sayyiduna Adam, peace be upon him, because when the one who beats strikes the face of his Muslim brother, Allah Almighty created Sayyiduna Adam, peace be upon him, in his image.
