On the prohibition of women entering public baths, even if covered
Hadith 5597
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ الصُّوفِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مَعِينٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ طَارِقٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ ثَابِتِ بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ الْخَطْمِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ ، فَلْيُكْرِمْ جَارَهُ ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ ، فَلا يَدْخُلِ الْحَمَّامَ إِلا بِمِئْزَرٍ ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ ، فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتَ ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ مِنْ نِسَائِكُمْ ، فَلا تَدْخُلِ الْحَمَّامَ " ، قَالَ : فَنَمَيْتُ بِذَلِكَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ فِي خِلافَتِهِ ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ ، أَنْ سَلَ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ حَدِيثِهِ ، فَإِنَّهُ رِضًا ، فَسَأَلَهُ ، ثُمَّ كَتَبَ إِلَى عُمَرَ ، فَمَنَعَ النِّسَاءَ عَنِ الْحَمَّامِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his neighbor. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should enter the bathhouse wearing a lower garment. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent. And among your women, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not enter the bathhouse."
The narrator states: I wrote this and sent it to Umar bin Abdul Aziz during his caliphate, so he wrote a letter to Abu Bakr bin Muhammad to inquire from Muhammad bin Thabit about the narrations he transmitted, because he is a trustworthy narrator. Abu Bakr bin Muhammad inquired from him about this, then wrote to Umar bin Abdul Aziz, so Umar bin Abdul Aziz imposed a ban on women entering the bathhouse.
