On the prohibition of being alone with a non-mahram woman, even if she is not married
Hadith 5586
أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ ، قَالَ : خَطَبَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ بِالْجَابِيَةِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَامَ فِي مِثْلِ مَقَامِي هَذَا ، فَقَالَ : " أَحْسِنُوا إِلَى أَصْحَابِي ، ثُمَّ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ، ثُمَّ يَفْشُو الْكَذِبُ ، حَتَّى يَحْلِفَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى الْيَمِينِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْتَحْلَفَ عَلَيْهَا ، وَيَشْهَدَ عَلَى الشَّهَادَةِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُسْتَشْهَدَ عَلَيْهَا ، فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَنَالَ بُحْبُوحَةَ الْجَنَّةِ ، فَلْيَلْزَمِ الْجَمَاعَةَ ، فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ مَعَ الْوَاحِدِ ، وَهُوَ مِنَ الاثْنَيْنِ أَبْعَدُ ، أَلا لا يَخْلُوَنَّ رَجُلٌ بِامْرَأَةٍ ، فَإِنَّ ثَالِثَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ ، أَلا وَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ تَسُوؤُهُ سَيِّئَتُهُ ، وَتَسُرُّهُ حَسَنَتُهُ ، فَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ " .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: At the place of "Jabiyah," Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to us and informed us: Just as I am standing (to deliver the sermon), in the same way the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) also stood. He said: Treat my companions well, then those who come after them, then after that, falsehood will spread to such an extent that a man will swear an oath before it is even demanded from him, and he will present testimony before it is even requested from him. Whoever among you wishes to enter Paradise should adhere to the (Muslim) community, for indeed, Satan is with a single person and is farther from two. Beware! No man should be alone with (a non-mahram) woman, for the third among them will be Satan. Beware! Whoever among you dislikes evil and likes good, he is a believer.
