Chapter on Etiquette of Sleep – On Allah’s dislike for those who sleep on their stomachs
Hadith 5550
أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ سَلْمٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ طِغْفَةَ الْغِفَارِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ فِي الصُّفَّةِ بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ ، فَقَالَ : يَا فُلانُ ، انْطَلِقْ مَعَ فُلانٍ ، وَيَا فُلانُ ، انْطَلِقِ مَعَ فُلانٍ ، حَتَّى بَعَثَ خَمْسَةً أَنَا خَامِسُهُمْ ، فَقَالَ : قُومُوا مَعِي ، فَفَعَلْنَا ، فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَى عَائِشَةَ ، وَذَلِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ الْحِجَابُ ، فَقَالَ : يَا عَائِشَةُ ، أَطْعِمِينَا ، فَقَرَّبَتْ جَشِيشَةً ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : يَا عَائِشَةُ ، أَطْعِمِينَا ، فَقَرَّبَتْ حَيْسًا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : يَا عَائِشَةُ ، اسْقِينَا ، فَجَاءَتْ بِعُسٍّ ، فَشَرِبَ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : يَا عَائِشَةُ ، اسْقِينَا ، فَجَاءَتْ بِعُسٍّ دُونَهُ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : إِنْ شِئْتُمْ نِمْتُمْ عِنْدَنَا ، وَإِنْ شِئْتُمْ أَتَيْتُمُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَنِمْتُمْ فِيهِ ، قَالَ : فَنِمْنَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ ، فَأَصَابَنِي نَائِمًا عَلَى بَطْنِي ، فَرَكَضَنِي بِرِجْلِهِ ، فَقَالَ : مَا لَكَ وَلِهَذِهِ النَّوْمَةِ ، هَذِهِ نَوْمَةٌ يَكْرَهُهَا اللَّهُ ، أَوْ يُبْغِضُهَا اللَّهُ " .
Sayyiduna Qais bin Tughfah Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us after Maghrib while we were present at the platform of Suffah. He said: O so-and-so, you go along with so-and-so, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent five people, among whom I was also included. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You people come with us, so we did so. We went to the house of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her); this was before the command of hijab was revealed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)! Give us something to eat, so she brought forth jashisha (a specific type of food). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), give us (some more) to eat, so she presented hais (a specific type of food). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), give us (something) to drink, so she brought 'as (a specific type of drink). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank it, then he said: O Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), give us something more to drink, so she brought more 'as, which was a little less than before. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to us): If you wish, you may sleep at our place, and if you wish, you may go to the mosque and sleep there. The narrator says: So we slept in the mosque. In the last part of the night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and found me sleeping on my stomach, so he nudged me with his foot and said: What is the reason you are sleeping like this? This is a way of sleeping which Allah Almighty dislikes (the narrator is unsure, perhaps the words are) which Allah Almighty hates.
Hadith 5551
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُوسَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لا يَسْتَلْقِ الإِنْسَانُ عَلَى قَفَاهُ ، وَيَضَعْ إِحْدَى رِجْلَيْهِ عَلَى الأُخْرَى " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : هَذَا الْفِعْلُ الَّذِي زَجَرَ عَنْهُ : هُوَ أَنْ يَسْتَلْقِيَ الْمَرْءُ عَلَى قَفَاهُ ، ثُمَّ يَشِيلَ إِحْدَى رِجْلَيْهِ ، وَيَضَعَهَا عَلَى الأُخْرَى ، وَذَاكَ أَنَّ الْقَوْمَ كَانُوا أَصْحَابَ مَيَازِرَ ، وَإِذَا اسْتَعْمَلَ مَا وَصَفْتُ ، مَنْ عَلَيْهِ الْمِئْزَرُ دُونَ السَّرَاوِيلِ ، رُبَّمَا تُكْشَفُ عَوْرَتُهُ ، فَمِنْ أَجْلِهِ مَا نَهَى عَنْهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No person should lie on his back in such a way that one of his feet is placed over the other."
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The act which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade refers to a person lying on his back in such a way that one foot is placed over the other. The reason for this is that people used to wear waistcloths, and if someone who is wearing a waistcloth and not trousers lies in this manner, it may result in his private parts being exposed. For this reason, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade this.
