Chapter on Etiquette of Sleep – On reciting a specific surah before sleep
Hadith 5543
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ شُمَيْلٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَقِيلٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَرَادَ النَّوْمَ ، جَمَعَ يَدَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ نَفَثَ فِيهِمَا ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ وَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ، ثُمَّ يَمْسَحُ بِهِمَا وَجْهَهُ وَرَأْسَهُ وَسَائِرَ جَسَدِهِ " ، قَالَ عَقِيلٌ : وَرَأَيْتُ ابْنَ شِهَابٍ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ .
Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would go to sleep, he would bring both his hands together, blow on them, then recite Surah Ikhlas, Surah Falaq, and Surah Nas. Then he would wipe both hands over his face, his head, and his entire body. Aqil narrates: I have also seen Ibn Shihab Zuhri doing this.
