Instruction to Trim the Mustache and Leave the Beard
Hadith 5475
أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ : أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَمَرَ بِإِحْفَاءِ الشَّوَارِبِ ، وَإِعْفَاءِ اللِّحَى " ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : مَا رَوَى مَالِكٌ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ غَيْرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ ، وَاسْمُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ : عُمَرُ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to trim the moustache short and to let the beard grow.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Imam Malik has not narrated any hadith from Abu Bakr bin Nafi’ except this narration, and the name of Abu Bakr bin Nafi’ is Umar.
