Sayyiduna Abu Talha Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture."
The narrator says: I thought I would go to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and ask her about this. I went to her and said: O my mother, a person has narrated this hadith to me that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angels do not enter a house in which there is a picture or a dog." Did you hear the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) mention this? Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: No, but I will tell you what I saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) do. Once, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to participate in a battle. When it was time for his return, I took a cloth and hung it as a curtain. When he arrived, I welcomed him at the door. I said: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah descend upon you. All praise is due to Allah who honored you, helped you, and granted you dignity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards the house and saw that curtain. He did not reply to me. I noticed signs of displeasure on his face. I took down the curtain and tore it up. (The narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words) I cut it up.
Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah has not commanded us, regarding the provision He has given us, to clothe mud and stones. Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I made two parts of the cloth and filled them with leaves (i.e., made cushions out of them), and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did not object to me regarding this.
