Permissibility of Beautifying Clothes and Dress If Without Arrogance
Hadith 5467
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو يَعْلَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي سَمِينَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي حُبِّبَ إِلَيَّ الْجَمَالُ ، فَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَفُوقَنِي أَحَدٌ فِيهِ بِشِرَاكٍ ، أَفَمِنَ الْكِبْرِ هُوَ ؟ قَالَ : " لا ، إِنَّمَا الْكِبْرُ مَنْ سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ ، وَغَمَصَ النَّاسَ " .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Beauty impresses me. I do not like that anyone should surpass me even by a strap in this regard, so would this be arrogance? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: No, arrogance is that a person does not accept the truth and looks down upon people.
