Section on Beverages - Reason for the Prohibition of Drinking from Glazed Vessels
Hadith 5400
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ أَبُو يَعْلَى بِالأَبُلَّةِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ ضِرَارِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ ، فَزُورُوهَا ، وَنَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ لُحُومِ الأَضَاحِي أَنْ تُمْسِكُوهَا فَوْقَ ثَلاثٍ ، فَأَمْسِكُوهَا مَا بَدَا لَكُمْ ، وَنَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنِ النَّبِيذِ إِلا فِي سِقَاءٍ ، فَاشْرَبُوا ، وَلا تَشْرَبُوا مُسْكِرًا " .
Ibn Buraidah narrates from his father that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "I had forbidden you from visiting graves. Now you may visit them. I had forbidden you from keeping the meat of sacrifice for more than three days; now keep it as long as you find appropriate. And I had permitted you to drink nabidh only in water skins; now drink (nabidh) in any vessel you wish, but do not drink anything intoxicating."
Hadith 5401
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الأَزْدِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ شُمَيْلٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : " نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَفْدَ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ عَنِ النَّبِيذِ فِي الدُّبَّاءِ ، وَالْحَنْتَمِ ، وَالْمُزَفَّتِ ، وَالنَّقِيرِ ، وَالْمَزَادَةِ الْمَجْبُوبَةِ ، وَقَالَ : " انْبِذْ فِي سِقَائِكَ وَأَوْكِهِ ، وَاشْرَبْهُ حُلْوًا طَيِّبًا " ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، ائْذَنْ لِي فِي مِثْلِ هَذِهِ ، وَأَشَارَ النَّضْرُ بِكَفِّهِ ، فَقَالَ : " إِذًا تَجْعَلُهَا مِثْلَ هَذِهِ " ، وَأَشَارَ النَّضْرُ بِبَاعِهِ ، قَالَ أَبُو حَاتِمٍ : قَوْلُ السَّائِلِ : ائْذَنْ لِي فِي مِثْلِ هَذَا : أَرَادَ بِهِ إِبَاحَةَ الْيَسِيرِ فِي الانْتِبَاذِ فِي الدُّبَّاءِ وَالْحَنْتَمِ وَمَا أَشْبَهَهَا ، فَلَمْ يَأْذَنْ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَتَعَدَّى ذَلِكَ بَاعًا ، فَيَرْتَقِي إِلَى الْمُسْكِرِ ، فَيَشْرَبَهُ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade the delegation of the tribe of ‘Abd al-Qays from drinking nabidh (fermented drink) in dubba’, hantam, muzaffat, naqir, and water skins. He said: Prepare nabidh in your water skins, seal their mouths, and drink it as long as it is sweet and pure. One man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Will you permit me just this much? Here, the narrator named Nadr indicated with his palm. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Then you will make it this much. Here, the narrator named Nadr indicated with his span.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The questioner’s saying, “Permit me just this much,” by this he meant to ask for permission to prepare a small amount of nabidh in dubba’, hantam, and other such vessels. But the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not permit him, because there was a fear that he would increase it and make it as much as a span, and then it would reach the level of an intoxicant and he would drink it.
