Section on Beverages - Clarification That the Prophet Allowed Drinking from Certain Vessels Unless the Drink Intoxicates
Hadith 5390
أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي مَعْشَرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْبَجَلِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ الإِيَامِيِّ ، عَنْ مُحَارِبِ بْنِ دِثَارٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ ، فَنَزَلَ بِنَا وَنَحْنُ قَرِيبٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ رَاكِبٍ ، فَصَلَّى بِنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ ، ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ ، وَعَيْنَاهُ تَذْرِفَانِ ، فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ ، فَفَدَّاهُ بِالأَبِ وَالأُمِّ ، وَقَالَ : مَا لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنِّي اسْتَأْذَنْتُ فِي الاسْتِغْفَارِ لأُمِّي ، فَلَمْ يَأْذَنْ لِي ، فَدَمَعَتْ عَيْنِي رَحْمَةً لَهَا مِنَ النَّارِ ، وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ ثَلاثٍ : عَنْ زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ ، فَزُورُوهَا ، وَلْتَزِدْكُمْ زِيَارَتُهَا خَيْرًا ، وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ لُحُومِ الأَضَاحِي بَعْدَ ثَلاثٍ ، فَكُلُوا وَأَمْسِكُوا مَا شِئْتُمْ ، وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنِ الأَشْرِبَةِ فِي الأَوْعِيَةِ ، فَاشْرَبُوا فِي أَيِّ وِعَاءٍ شِئْتُمْ ، وَلا تَشْرَبُوا مُسْكِرًا " .
Ibn Buraidah narrates from his father: We were traveling with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He camped with us at a place; we were about a thousand riders. The Prophet (peace be upon him) led us in two rak‘ahs of prayer, then he turned towards us and tears were flowing from his eyes. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood before him and sacrificed his parents for him. He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon you)! What has happened to you? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I asked permission to seek forgiveness for my mother, but I was not granted permission, so tears flowed from my eyes due to mercy for her. Because of her being in Hell, I forbade you from three things. I had forbidden you from visiting graves; now you may visit them, for visiting graves increases goodness. I had forbidden you from keeping sacrificial meat for more than three days; now keep it as long as you wish. I had forbidden you from drinking in certain types of vessels; now drink in whatever vessel you wish, but do not drink anything intoxicating.
